I won the Award for Excellence at the 2017 Juried Art Exhibit!
The Opening was at WVU’s new ALumni gallery on November 12th, 2017…
Two years ago I went to the Tamarack near Beckley, West Virginia for this art opening, so I assumed this year the opening would also be at the Tamarack… it was not. It was 15 min from my house in Morgantown, WV.
I drove 6 hours on Nov 12th, and missed the award ceremony 🙁
Tara drove back from Baltimore early that morning so she could come with me… she was in the car 9+ hours that Sunday.
I’ve since learned to read the entirety of email’s, notably the ones where I’m to be some where at a certain time. I did the same thing the day before with a climbing film festival that I wanted to see. Day of, I went to the wrong place because it had always been in the same building for the last 4 years. I walked in, stood in line with a bunch of well-dressed parents and kids, and thinking “wow, I’m pretty stoked to see a more diverse audience getting into climbing”. Bought my ticket, walked into the main hallway where nutcrackers were being sold, thinking “wow, that’s an interesting thing to sell at a climbing film festival”. I then proceeded to the theatre, where I was handed the flier for the Nutcracker Musical…which I had just paid to see… Fail. I was able to get my money back, and made it across town to the climbing film festival before it had begun, but I failed to correct the core problem to why I had made this mistake in the first place… I don’t read my emails (I scan the first few lines and think I know what’s up). And so, the next day my assumptions caught up to me, and I wasted Tara’s and my entire day.
Anyway…I feel very honored to have won this art ward, and to have learned a valuable life lesson about assumptions as a result of it.
